Why I Live Where I Do

LIFE WITH A COWBOY

By Tonya Roberts
Who would have ever thought
I'd end up way out here…
If I hadn'ta give him that dog
If he hadn'ta bought me that beer…

Then I'd still be in town
Just a block from the grocery store
Now just to go for a loaf of bread
Takes a half an hour or more.

Life seemed a lot easier then
More time for important things
Like talking on the phone, painting my nails
Cleaning my rings.

Now it's more practical to clean my nails
Just look at all that dirt
Can't remember where I put my rings
Now what's that on my shirt?

He finally agreed on carpet
To cover the concrete floor
Maybe if I play my cards right
He'll build a new screen door.

Or that sidewalk made of worn out boards
It's a wonder I ain't broke my leg
While totin' in the groceries
I tripped and broke the eggs.

The heating situation
Is better than last year
A propane burnin' stove
Warms up your front - then your rear.

No curtains on the windows
Heck, there's nobody to peep in
Just dogs and cats and cows
Me and the kids…and him.

Nobody ever comes to visit
We're off the beaten path
Except for Jehovah's Witnesses
They've got us on their map.

And some guy runnin'
For commissioner - whatever that might be
He promised us he'd fix the road
He'll get a vote from me.

That road'll jar your teeth loose
Not to mention flats
If I've got to change another one
I'm throwin' in the hat.

I get the strong impression
He's puttin' me through a test
Just to see how tough I am
Well I'm hangin' in - at best.

Lookin out the windows
Of this house that he put together
I watch a covey of quail
I smell the faint scent of leather.

A baby deer we're raising
Comes up to get his dinner
He'll need us to make it through
This drought - and his first winter.

That sunset sure is pretty
I've never seen so many colors
And every time I see another one
It's even prettier than the others.

Guess I'll make some coffee
Get some wood and build a fire
He went out to feed his horse
He's made the day and I know he's tired.

The kids will come in starvin'
So I better get supper goin'
Not much in the pantry
Oh well, they like baloney.

I hear those coyotes startin' up
That moon sure is a bright one
The dogs have found a coon to chase
They never lack for fun.

You know, I'm kinda dumb at times
I've made countless mistakes in life
But, I thank God I had the sense
To become this country boy's wife.
