From U.S. 183
North, take FM 580 west at Lampasas.
About two hours from Austin.
Just
ten miles above Lake
Buchanan and one of the newest state parks, Colorado Bend State
Park is spacious and uncrowded. No more than 300 vehicles are allowed
into the 5,328-acre park. There are over twelve miles of hiking and
interpretive trails that take you past swimming holes, wildlife, and
hill country vegetation. The 2.7-mile Spicewood Springs Trail connects
to another one-mile trail from the main camping area. It follows a
creek down to the Colorado River with several holes for swimming along
the way. The 5.7-mile Upper Gorman Creek Trail loops through woodlands
and has several offshoot trails to customize distance. A 1.5-mile
hike and tour of Gorman Falls is also worth doing. You should wear
appropriate rubber-soled shoes for the hike, and drinking water and
bathrooms are not available in the falls area. Colorado Bend State
Park has six miles of lake frontage. Two spring-fed creeks form great
swimming holes. There are picnic sites and great views of deep canyons.
The park has primitive camping, chemical toilets, and a boat ramp.
