The Tucker Family of Andice
Andice, Texas

by Howard A Tucker
I was born in Andice on September 27, 1925. My mother was Elizabeth (Lizzie) Tucker who operated the Andice switchboard (telephone co.) during the late 20's and into the 40's. My mother had eight boys and one girl. All the boys served in the military except one who was stillborn.

I had two brothers in the Army, three of us were in the Navy, one brother in the Air Force, and one brother in the Marines. My sister Dena married a sailor who served in WW II. We were all educated in the little red school house in Andice. Andice was a wonderful place to raise a family.

I am including a picture of Andice during a snow storm in 1925, a picture of my mother at the Andice switchboard, and a picture of each of us boys in uniform. The picture of the snow storm is the same general area of the present-day yellow post office.

During the Great Depression we lived off what my mother made at the switchboard, which was located across the road from our house. We had two milk cows that we kept in an old barn located across the road from the present day post office. Each morning we would turn them out to graze the bar ditches south of town. We had a garden and raised chickens behind our house. All of the boys and my sister worked in the fields of our farmer neighbors. This provided some cash.

Today my sister and I and five brothers are still living in central Texas. After a poverty-filled beginning, we all have been very successful in life.
