Archie McDonald has retired at the East Texas Historical Assn. and no longer writes columns. - September, 2008
Dr. Archie McDonald is the executive director of the East Texas Historical Association of Nacogdoches, a position he has held since 1971. He also serves as editor of the East Texas Historical Journal and served as an advisory editor for the New Handbook of Texas, published by the Texas Historical Association.

He has written 13 books on various aspects of Texas history and served as the editor of 18 others. He is widely known for "Make Me a Map of the Valley: The Journal of Jedediah Hotchkiss, 1862-1862," which was listed by several authorities as one of the best books on the Civil War.

Dr. McDonald is a past president of the Texas Historical Association, past chair for the Texas Committee for the Humanities, past chair for the State Board of Review for the National Register, and past chair of the Old San Antonio Road Preservation Commission.

He is a professor of history at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. He holds a BS degree from Lamar University in Beaumont, a master's degree from Rice University in Houston, and a PhD from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.
