Texas Monuments, Statues

would much rather have men ask why I have no statue than why I have one."

Want to See Your Machete" by

5-29-12 It
was a momentous occasion for me... I was finally going to meet Ruthie Cade. Literally
minutes before, I had been able to find, after a previous failed attempt, ...
the 1,089th marker I have seen of the 1,136 placed way back in 1936 to memorialize
the multi-year celebration of Texas' Independence from Mexico. Here I was, after
having seen nearly 96% of that total, meeting the one person who made a lot of
that search possible. |

Centennial
Index by Sarah Reveley
During
the 1936 Texas Centennial celebration, the state built memorial museums, restored
historical structures, improved parks, erected statues of important Texans, and
intalled over 1,000 historical markers. This
ongoing project examines the extant Centennial projects and includes the stories
behind them.

The Crystal City Statue That Might’ve Been Max
Sandfield suggested that Popeye be carved from native Texas limestone. Today the
suggestion would’ve won him the contest hands-down, but back in 1937 limestone
might have been considered too dignified for a mere cartoon character - despite
whatever contributions to nutrition-awareness. Medina, Texas has since erected
an oversized limestone apple - and courthouses around the state are carved with
a variety of flora, fauna, and limestone cowboys. It appears Mr. Sandfield’s proposal
was ahead of its time. ... moreDallas
