TEXAS BRIDGES

Texas Spans

The symbolism of bridges, or so we're told, represents problem solving and compromise. Permanent handshakes extended across chasms of prejudice and misunderstanding. Romantic ideas like that are great for tourist brochures, but it gives us a headache. People see bridges as tall places to drive over or look down from. Our bridges here aren't symbols of anything; they're real rusting, riveted iron spans. They're mostly bridges to the 19th Century, but we find that handy since so much of our content lives there.

I was so sure I would find info on Vince's Bridge and its connection with Sam Houston and the Battle of San Jacinto - but nothing in your site. There has even been a neighborhood association in 1998 trying to restore that bridge. A marker put up by the DRT is located on N. Richy Street in Pasadena, 1 mile north of SH 225 (LaPorte Freeway) - a couple of blocks behind the circular-shaped Ramada Inn and among the army of railroad tank cars. I just thought this would make a great entry page for your site as to historic bridges in the state. - Roland Jary, Fort Worth, April 21, 2002

Subject: Denton County Iron Bridges Hi, just wanted to say I like your site! I'm a big fan of old roads, old bridges, old towns churches etc, so your site is a great way for me to plan road trips!

Your bridge page is great, but you should hve a link to Denton County Historic Iron Bridges My buddies and I often use them to string together a bike ride on county roads - we can cover 5-10 in one ride, depending on the route. - Scott Braden, Richardson TX, May 24, 2004
