Riverside Park is free, but should Cost be a consideration?

These are actually two side trips, but are connected because of one incident. This is the absolute must-see-must-do of your trip to Gonzales. South of town (183) you'll see the park and a nine-hole golf course. The park itself offers picnic tables along the Guadalupe River and a duck pond and swimming pool, although the restrooms are currently out of order due to last years flooding. Use the new facilities next to the fire station.

    Gonzales Texas dam

There's a good view of the dam (if you are observant) which provided Gonzales with the means to be self-sufficient.
A mill, an ice factory and an electrical generating plant all owed their existence to the surge of water over this structure.Gonzales_TX_icetruck_Archives_copy.jpg (6788 bytes)Ice Plant

    Champion Bloodweed
The golf course (with extremely reasonable greens fees) ends at the river. The vegetation on the other side of the river is primarily bloodweed which grows to a size that must be seen to be believed. Our humble suggestion to Gonzales is to add a tenth hole to the golf course and install blades beneath the golf carts.
The opposite bank is the site where the "old eighteen" stalled the Mexican request for the cannon they had been loaned. .... Cost, and the Battle/Skirmish/Fracas
