The Jukebox at Sonora
Or, Just Another Weekend in West Texas (1959)

by Bob Mohel
Adventures in Bridge Excavations
K & W (Austin) Drilling Rig
When my buddy and I were moving to Plata and Casa Piedra in 1959 we had no driver to drive the car. I drove the rig and my buddy drove the pickup, and he was pulling a welding machine. After three weeks without the car we caught a train on a Friday night and went home to get it. My brother wanted to go back with us, so I told him to pack his glad bags. We left at noon Sunday and we were running hard. We got to Junction and got more beer. We were trying to make a dance in Fort Stockton at a place called the Cow Pasture. We stopped in Sonora at a bar and my brother had his shirt unbuttoned. This cowboy came up to him and told him to button up. My brother told me what he said, and I told the guy [where to get off]. He was going to get me, but I hit him with my left fist and put him in the jukebox. Glass and records were every where, so we got out of there. Eleven miles west of Sonora we crashed. My buddy and I almost got killed when we ran under a semi that was stopped to make a left turn. He had no stop lights or turn signals. So we did not make the dance.
