Lightning Only Needs to Strike Once
Plata - Casa Piedra

by Bob Mohel
Adventures in Bridge Excavations
Drilling in Plata, Casa Piedra
The job at Plata/ Casa Piedra 1958
One after noon we saw rain clouds in the northwest. The inspector told us that he was going to get out of there. I told him “it’s not raining here.” He said that there was one low water crossing on RR169 that always floods and it took a long time for the water to go down. So we left behind him as the lightning started striking all around. All at once the radio went off.

The next day I was telling the inspector about how close the lightning was and about the radio going off. He looked at the antenna and showed it to us. “Look at the little ball on top,” he said. It was burnt in half.

The scary part was that we had been carrying a 55 gallon drum of gas in the bed of the truck.
