Newport
History in a Pecan Shell
First
known as Bear Hill, the town was established in the early 1870s by a man
named L. Hancock. In the late 1870s, when the time came for a post office, leading
townspeople submitted an anagram of the first letters of their surnames. (Evidently
Mr. Hancock wasn't included.) The post office was granted 1878.
Newport
had 176 residents by 1900 which increased to 280 by the mid-1920s. The town maintained
the same population through the Great Depression but by the 1950s, the town had
declined to 85. The estimated population of 70 has been in use since the 1960s.Newport
