    History in a Pecan Shell

In the late 1840s, settler John L. Smith arrived. He is thought to be the first resident of what was to become Lawhon Springs, but it was David B. Lawhon who became the community’s namesake. Lawhon bought the property that included the springs in the second part of the name.

By 1900 a school (which doubled as a church) was in operation but the community never developed far beyond the scattered residences, the school and a cemetery.

After the school was merged with those in Lexington, the community faded until only the cemetery remained.
