History in a Pecan Shell

Settlement is believed to have been in the early 1850s when the region was known as "The Barrens." The towns namesake is thought to be Matthew Cartwright, whose family gave land for a school in 1882 although a post office and store didn't materialize until the mid 1890s. The post office closed in 1907.

Population figures are not available for the early years, but in the 1930s there were only 100 residents listed on the census. After WWII through the mid 1960s the population remained at 75. From 1968 through 2000, the population has been given as 61.
