La Llorona

by Elizabeth Bussey Sowdal
Elizabeth Bussey Sowdal
I grew up in Las Cruces, NM which is near the Rio Grande. I often head stories about people who had seen and heard La Llorona. The story we knew was that she was an Indian woman who traveled with a conquistador (Coronado???). They had a child together. One night while they were camped near what is now Mesilla, NM, her child fell into the Rio Grande and was swept away in the strong currents. She wanted to stay and search for her child but the conquistador insisted that they move out in the morning. She refused and subsequently died there all alone, after searching and searching for her poor, drowned child.

I wrote this poem in high school, and apologize for how awful it is, but the story always captivated me:

Canta La Llorona
Una decima triste
Debajo de la luna,
Las lagrimas fuerte.

Cantaba quedito,
Muy lento y dulce,
Para una criatura,
Fria y muerte.
