LIKE CHILDREN

by David Knape

Squirrels are our tree children
always mischievous
always plotting against authority
disobeying the rules

you can see them thinking
rubbing their paws with delight
their minds racing to figure out
what kind of mischief to get into next

like kids, squirrels are daring
not afraid to tackle anything
anticipating the reward
a treat at the end

they leap, they slide, they hang upside down
they will do anything to steal bird seed
they are ingenious in figuring out how
to outsmart the feeder
and the man who lives in the house

they know the slam of a door
means to run like heck
caught in the act they scatter
then creep back in when the smoke clears

its just a game for them
so cute you cannot get mad
and always those innocent eyes
like children.
