THE LIZARD STORY

by David Knape

Every little boy loves lizards
the fact that there is something wild
roaming around on the doorstep
a creature fast and slippery
the fun is in the chase
and when the little boy does catch it
it is a victory of sorts
he has found a friend to talk to
and feed and take care of
so of course out comes the plastic tub
the little bottle cap of water
then leaves and grass to make it feel at home
and the little boy is so proud of his lizard
he names it Larry
(a bit poetic don't you think)
but the lizard is not so dumb
it is planning its escape
and when left out in the sun
the lizard makes his getaway and is never seen again
and the little boy's heart is broken
he cries for what could have been
he cries for all his hard work now gone awry
and the bigger question
what will happen to Larry now
the little boy had bonded with the lizard
had viewed it as a special prize
an accomplishment
it is not an easy thing to do
to capture a lizard
but as things always do
the memory of the lizard will eventually fade away
and another thing comes along to take its place
because in our lives
haven't we all experienced chasing Lizards
had dreams shattered by reality
and overcome disappointments
yet in the end we just go on
to the next thing and the next
little boys will learn as do we all
sometimes we win
sometimes we lose
such is learning
such is life.
