SHOE TREE

by David Knape

A giant was
this cottonwood
an age old tree
that stood for good
tossed shoes were left
among in its leaves
collected there
as history

So many years
it proudly stood
along the highway
people would
toss up their shoes
like souvenirs
sometimes singles
sometimes pairs

Until some vandal
with no pride
cut it down
in dark of night
one with such evil
in their eye
we know not what
it satisfied

What gratification
does one get
no way of
understanding it
in cutting down
this age old tree
likewise were lost
fond memories

We hope someday
another tree
will sprout where
the old one used to be
then once again
let limbs receive
more love and shoes
among its leaves.
