WALDEN

by David Knape

Little lake
a gem stone of blue
a drop of purity
in the woods
a haven
a spring of inspiration

now
overrun by
overflow crowds
parked cars
soiled with
too many plastic bags
Styrofoam cups
fast food trash

the little jewel
is no more
now its just another pool
with crowds crammed around it
boaters revving up the noise
litter lapping at its shores

change has worn away
its storied luster
what Walden was
is no more

and
from the woods
a cry carries in the wind
as Thoreau turns over
in his grave.
