THE YARD MAN

by David Knape

An old guy comes
to mow our yard
he works in dirt
yet works so hard

His day is long
from can to can't
stains on his shirt
holes in his pants

all work by hand
tough as it gets
dirt under nails and
soaked with sweat

his day is long
in grueling sun
it saps his strength
but he goes on

no stopping till
his work complete
he may be old
but he's not beat

surprising for
a man his age
so many hours
yet never paid

at end of day
pain accompanies
with all due respect
the old man is me.
