History in a Pecan Shell

Named for a stand of timber along Little Cypress Creek, Spicewood dates from the late 19th Century. How late? Well, the post office was granted in 1899. Smaller settlements in southern Burnet County and western Travis County (Hatnie Flat) that were declining or too small for their own post office started using the one at Spicewood.

The local school district known as Rockvale changed its name to Spicewood in 1919.

The population reached 100 in the 1920s and in 1933 it had increased to 125. It wasn't until the 1940s when a decent road connected Spicewood to the outside world. What had been FM 93 was later enlarged and improved to become today's Highway 71.

The 1970 census counted 100 residents and it remained at 110 from the mid 1970s through 1990. An influx of people leaving Austin pushed the population to 2,000 for the 2000 census and the official Texas highway map put the population at 4,000 (estimate) for 2010.
