History in a Pecan Shell

Roundup came into existence in 1912 when the Santa Fe railroad established a rail spur and shipping pens here. The name was suggested by a railroad executive, but the vastness of the landscape and the distance from civilization possible discouraged would-be citizens. Nevertheless, the railroad had a section house here which was joined by a cotton gin and store.

The first population figure available showed fifty hearty people here in 1948. This may have been Roundup's high water mark. The 1980 census counted twenty-seven people which has dropped to twenty in the year 2000. Anton, Texas serves whatever schoolchildren there are in Roundup.
