History
in a Pecan Shell1924
was Whitharral’s big year. Prior to that year, it had been ranchlands belonging
to the Littlefield Ranch. In 1924 small parcels were sold to create farmsteads.
The name is an amalgam of the first and last names of Dr. Whitfield Harral, an
early settler.
A store opened the following year and a school was built.
In the first year three churches were established. Land was donated for a cemetery.
A post office opened that same year (1925) and a high school was completed before
the decade was out.
Early population figures are unavailable. After WWII
there were 300 residents which declined to just 111 for the 1980 census. Whitharral
entered the 21st Century with a population around 175 and the post office still
serves the community. | |
