History in a Pecan Shell

By Clint Skinner

While traveling east away from Rockwall along Interstate Highway 30, a person could be forgiven for missing the town of Mobile City. After all, it only covers a total area of 0.02 square miles. Located less than a mile from Rockwall at the intersection of I-30 Frontage Road and Ivey Lane, Mobile City was originally a trailer park on 8.8 acres of land. The residents wanted to open a liquor store and felt that incorporation would be the best method of accomplishing that goal. The endeavor proved successful with a vote on January 25, 1990 for incorporation, followed by an approval for the selling of alcohol later that year. The second election created lots of controversy for the residents of Rockwall County. Despite the uproar, Mobile City honored the wishes of its citizens and became the only place in the county to buy alcohol until 2007.

Served by the Rockwall Independent School District, Mobile City's population reached 196 by the turn of the century. It declined to 188 ten years later and rose to 209 in the year of 2020. It currently has the highest population density in Texas with 13,862 people per square mile and enjoys the 74th spot on the national list.

"Discovered this town using Google Maps... Not every day you come across a town that was formed for the main purpose of opening a liquor store." - Clint Skinner, November 14, 2020
