History
in a Pecan Shell
Originally
called Illinois Colony since it was founded by settlers from that state
in 1890, it was soon renamed to honor Amos Thornberry, a horticulturist who introduced
orchard-based agriculture to the region.
A post office opened the following
year (1891) but closed in 1908. There was hope of a railroad coming through to
connect the town with Witchita
Falls, but it never materialized.
The population was a mere 20 residents
from the 1930s through the 40s which has since increased to 60 – the number in
use since the 1960 census. | |
