Discontinued Post Offices
John Germann is
a retired teacher for whom Houston, Texas has been home since 1950.
He is a "history nut." He taught history for over four decades, and
he continues to pursue it - reading it, researching it, writing it.
He is an avid and active philatelist, with a special interest in collecting
the postal history of Texas. Of particular interest are postmarks
from those post offices which have come and gone. There are thousands
of these discontinued post offices (DPOs) in the state. Most have
disappeared from the maps and the scenery, and their postmarks frequently
represent the only historical reminder that they ever existed. He
also enjoys travel, inside and outside of Texas, eating, watching
movies, and just being a retired wastrel - all in the company of his
lovely and exceedingly tolerant wife, Caro Ann.
I have published Texas Post Offices By County serially and
then on CD-Rom - based on 40 total years of research among the primary
sources, histories, and maps at the National Archives, Library of
Congress, Texas State Archives, Texas General Land Office, Barker
Center for Texas History, Houston Public Library (Texas Room), Clayton
Genealogy Library (Houston), American Philatelic Research Library,
the Internet, etc. I have also published varied articles and compendia
on Texas post offices in journals and magazines, and am a very active
member of the Texas Postal History Society.
