History in a Pecan
ShellBoxwood
did have its own post office in operation from 1895 to 1906. No one is sure of
when it came into being but best estimates are in the early 1880s or the early
1890s.
Even though only thirty people lived here in 1900, the community
has a store and school. After WWII
the school merged with the one in Ore City which
took a large chip from the community identity.
The community appears today
as it it did in the mid 1960s – scattered residences and nothing more. The scattered
housing produced 20 people for the 2000 census.
Photographer’s Note: “My
modern software map indicates that the intersection of FM 1649 and Snapdragon
road is the location of the former community of Boxwood. I couldn’t find the first
indication or relic that there was once a community here. All there is here now
are scattered modern ranches and farms. Perhaps the only proof of the community’s
existence is to be found in bound references or antique maps.” - Gerald
