History in a Pecan Shell

The former town is also known regionally as Short Pone. Information is scare and so are early population figures. Residents of Pone received a post office (see postal map) in the late 1890s. The first postmaster was one Luther O. Neeley – the same name of the local cemetery. The post office closed in 1905 and mail was rerouted through Laneville.

The estimated population was around 25 through the Depression and WWII, when the town supported two businesses. As of 1990 it remains listed as a community.
Photographer’s Note:
“Pone is only a dot on a map. I saw no residences – just the Neeley Cemetery on FM 839 – about a quarter mile southwest of where that road intersects with CR 457.” - Gerald Massey

Pone, Texas

by David Knape

Ghosts of those
entombed in stone
are what remains
of little Pone

A place that ached
to be a town
just never grew
much on its own

Where once was life
now all alone
a shadow of
the place called Pone.
