Here's a building with nearly as many names as floors. Built in 1932, during the heyday of the "Medical Arts Building" era, the Baxter Building is and has been Harlingen's tallest edifice. Space is something the valley is not short of, so it's easy to see why the skyscraper concept didn't catch on. Like Waco's lonely Amicable Insurance Building, the Baxter was never to have an equal. Spanish speaking Harlingenians avoided keeping up with all the name changes by simply calling it "The Nine Floors." New owners? Who cares? It still has nine stories.
