A WALK BEFORE CHRISTMAS

by David Knape

Going for a walk
down an old dirt road
now littered with the castaway cans
from bank fishermen
who never caught anything
but cold

the road is muddy from recent rain
it winds through the woods like it
has lost its way
not knowing which way to turn

all nature is in winter sleep
the cedar and the oak remain green
spreading their branches and their spell
the musty earth gives off its fine aroma

the wind brushes by my face
leaves flutter down
there is dampness in the air
you can feel it
smell the smell of leaves and wood
of mother earth itself
all mixed in a primal stew
that warms a hungry soul

there is no one here
and no one needs to be
there is no need for company
my companions are the field sparrows
who flit so quickly by
the herons fishing silently in the shallows
the geese flying in formation through the clouds
the music of the lake waves slapping against the shore

the woods are all I need for now
giving me its gift of solitude
in this the giving season

on this little quiet walk
before Christmas.
