    Catching Weeds

    by David Knape

I love to go out fishing
    satisfies an inner need
    my biggest disappointment is
all I ever catch is weeds

I toss my line out in the lake
    then watch the line recede
but when I reel it in again
    all I've caught is weeds

    Fishing is a gentle sport
    have patience to succeed
    but patience is not practical
when all I catch is weeds

I am not the best angler
    that point I will concede
but surely there's a fish somewhere
    hiding in those weeds

    Other fishermen catch fish
    tell stories we believe
    exaggeration is their catch
    they easily deceive

    Their stories might be make-believe
    a fudge or two indeed
truth to a angler is not unlike
    a fish among the weeds

For me, I'll go on trying
    unsure where lines will lead
a slack line means I'm once again
    lost among the weeds

    I'll continue casting lines
    yet doubt that I'll succeed
this poem is an elusive fish
and all I catch is weeds.
