GRANDFATHER'S LAPS

by David Knape

Grandfathers sit
with their grandsons
and listen to them
tell their little stories

of where they have been
or what they have done

it is the biggest story
the grandsons can tell
the most important thing
in their small world

stories begin in grandpa's laps
where closeness
and love are shared

a bond then is
forever joined
by what is felt between
laps and hearts

an attraction
and a familial connection between
the sweetness of youth
and the wisdom of age

natural to
all grandfathers who have laps

and all grandsons
who sit in them.
