Long Walk

by David Knape

The old dirt road winds and weaves
into the woods like a drunk on Saturday night
there are places where it narrows and
places where the ruts are deep and full of water

here are deer tracks in the mud
and tread marks from ATV's
horse tracks leave their half-moon impressions
and delicate raccoon prints show a path to the creek

I follow the road on and on
until it widens out a bit and the tree canopy disperses
I startle an angry blue heron
who startles me with his angry squawk

I fight my way through underbrush and briers
going around mud holes too wide and deep to navigate
until finally I come to the end of the road

there is the river
the road runs right into it

the river is smooth as glass
with a sandbank as soft and white as an ocean beach
a dog barks in the distance
a hawk screeches from an old dead tree

what a nice surprise the river is
what a reward for following something to its finish

a lot of thinking happens along a lengthy walk
when you follow a trail and a thought to its conclusion

you pass through all manner of thoughts
some muddy, some clear as a river
you can untangle your thoughts too
if you walk far enough

a long walk is good for the heart
but even better for the mind

a good workout for both
if you take the time.
