PAPER PIRATES

by David Knape
Give them packing paper
and toss in some moving boxes
and boys will find adventure
in the midst of it all

adrift in a papery sea
they swim
dive
and come up for air

With Cheshire cat grins
on their cute innocent faces
having made the grand discovery
that trash is exciting
and that they and only they
know the secret
of where pirates gold is buried
where the treasure map will lead

alligators and tigers lie in wait
but they fend them off
with cardboard swords and
pirate pistols
hacking their way through the jungle of paper

on the far horizon is the dullness of adulthood
but for now they are just boys
doing what boys always do

finding fun
sailing the beautiful sea of spontaneity

then coming ashore
on their own magic isle of imagination.
