Poem in Black and White

by David Knape

Forgive the color our skin
but we were born that way,
it really is unfortunate
that it won't go away

Our skin is what's responsible
for all the ills on earth,
yet it's never proven anything
especially a man's worth

How would it be if we could change
our skins to a different color,
maybe then we'd really see
how we look to one another

An accident of birth is all
that causes black or white,
but color shouldn't enter in
to what is wrong or right

Color should not be the code
that's blamed for all our sins,
and no one should apologize
for the color of one's skin

Whiteness doesn't ruin a man
nor blackness set apart,
the only thing important is
what's inside of a man's heart.
