A SOLDIER'S DEATH

by David Knape

An image stalks our memory
too gruesome to forget
a photograph in black and white
the starkness of his death

His body hung upon a wire
he was his mother's pride
now slung into the razor wire
barbs twisted in his side

What a young life was wasted
when brutal death was met
inhumanity was in the end
the result of this conflict

The soldier so unknowing
his body now awaits
till his blood slowly drips to ground
gangrene insinuates

How soon his cause forgotten
war's savageness disturbs
one bloody death caught camera's flash
what purpose did it serve.
