    The Forgetting

    by David Knape

    folks came to the city
    to get jobs and prosper
and buy a house in suburbia
    with close neighbors
    but an 8 foot fence
and the city gave them convenience
but along the way they lost
    the touch of nature
    the compact with the earth
for the city was paved and sterile
    and they forgot the feel
    of dirt on their hands
the sweet aroma of plowed soil
    the joy of growing things
    from seed
    the strength of knowing
they made the things they wore
and grew the things they ate
    now it is too late
    they can't go back
    the city grows
but it can't fulfill the longing
    of being
on the land and of the land
    seeing its beauty
    its soothing touch
    now hands grow soft
and only old scrapbook photos tell
the way it used to be
    and men grow weak
    in the forgetting
    of how to plow
    and when to reap.
