You're Goin' To The Moon, Alice

    by David Knape

There is someone on the moon
only it's not a man but a woman
    a funny lady
who could take a joke and make a joke
    who appreciates a good laugh

    I think it's Alice
    from the Honeymooners
who when Ralph got upset and threatened
You're goin' to the moon, Alice

    actually did
    poor Alice
how will she get back home
    the Honeymooners are all gone
those big blond furniture TV consoles
    turned into dainty flat screens
    dials into remotes

    we don't laugh much anymore
but back then we laughed a lot
enjoying the simple humor of a couple
the trials of a husband and wife
    trying to make it
    fighting each other
but fighting for something we all wanted
    a better life
making up at the end with a kiss and a hug

    that America is lost
    but we're still here
    watching reruns and
    laughing at those Honeymooners
    that line about Alice
    goin' to the moon

    how real it was
    and so funny
4 people in a single room
just a bare table and 4 chairs
making us laugh with easy humor
they were so much like us
    that's why we laughed

can you look at the moon
    and not think of Alice?
if Ralph was here he would see her
    and sentimentally smile

    we know
    he loved her deep down
    even though
they fought like cats and dogs
    and despite the fact
he sent her to the moon
    every Saturday night at 8pm

    a make-believe marriage
    that was real to us
    and still is.
