History on
a Pinhead
The community used the ruins of a wool-washing mill to form its nucleus.
It became a stop on the San
Antonio and Aransas Pass railroad and was named for L. S. Berg,
described as a San Antonio
“promoter.” In 1887 a post office named Hellemans opened but shut
down after only three years. By 1892 the post office reopened and
the names Helleman and Berg’s Mill were used interchangeably.
Proximity to San Antonio
curbed growth and by 1940 there were barely 100 residents. Post war
growth absorbed the population and by 1960s, the community was dropped
from maps.
Berg’s Mill became part of greater San Antonio, the only “hard” evidence
being the plaque on the bridge.
