History in a Pecan Shell

The community grew around the deport of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railroad in 1904. In 1907 a post office was opened which served the town until its closing in 1988.

Vanderbilt survived the Great Depression and at the end of WWII, it had 300 residents served by ten businesses.

Vanderbilt peaked in 1962 with a reported 900 residents. But by 1971 that figure had dropped to 667. That same figure was reported for the 1980 and 1990 census.

The 2000 census reported 411 people.
