History on
a Postcard
Although there
is no history currently available for the former community of Republic,
proof of its existence is provided by a postmark in the collection
of Doyle Armstrong who has shared this image so that Republic can
be included on our list of
ghost towns.
Subject: Republic, Texas Ghost town
"I collect old Texas Postmarks from towns that no longer have
a post office and ran across a postcard from the town or community
of Republic, Texas, dated Jan 31, 1908.
From an historian in Llano
County, I was told that the town of Republic (Ghost Town) was
located about 8 miles North of Llano
in Llano County off
of highway 71. The land where Republic was located is on private land.
There was a post office in Republic that opened in 1880, closed and
opened back up a few times and finally closed for good in 1909. One
day, I will visit the location and see if there are any remaining
buildings etc." - Doyle Armstrong, Beaumont,
