History in a Pecan Shell

Dodson dates from 1910 with the arrival of the Wellington branch of the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railroad. Elmore Dodson became the town’s namesake for giving the railroad a large (200 acre) grant.

Unlike most towns, Dodson had an official opening which occurred on Ausgust 29th 1910. Celebrants came all the way from Oklahoma (which began a mile east of the city limits). A picnic was held and in short order, the town had a store, hotel and post office as well as a telephone exchange and a newspaper.

School was held in one of several churches until a permanent school building was erected. The town incorporated in the 1920s and had a population reported at 426 for the 1930 census.

A PWA water system was installed in the 1930s and after WWII, area schools sent their students to Dodson High School. The population declined to around 350 for the 1940 census and by the mid 1980s, it dropped to 185.

The 1990 population was given as 113, which had swelled to 115 for the 2000 count.
