History
in a Pecan Shell
The town, now a suburb of Abilene,
was named after pioneer J. J. Wylie who settled in the area in 1880.
In
1902 John H. Vance opened a store in the area and Mary V. Wylie, widow of J. J.
Wylie, donated land for a school.
A post office was opened in the Vance
store in 1904 and was designated “Sambo.” Mail was routed through Abilene
in 1912. Mrs. Wylie donated an additional two acres for school expansion on the
condition that the town be named after her late husband which was done. The town
was later absorbed by Abilene.
