History in
a Pecan Shell
In the mid 1850s, the community was once known as Rainey's Creek.
A post office using that name opened in 1857. Just before the Civil
War, a few hundred people (about 70 families) lived in the community
which became Coryell in the early 1870s.
By the 1880s Coryell had two gins, a school and church, but the population
remained about the same. It reached its high-water mark of 406 in
1939 but fell to just 150 by 1943. The post office closed in 1958
and from the late 60s through 1990, the population was given as 125. |
