History in a Pecan Shell

Tokio was settled as early as 1868. It became a stop on the Texas Central Railroad in 1882. It shares its name with a Terry County town - and that was the one that was granted a U. S. post office as Tokio. Tokio here underwent a change in name during WWII to Wiggins.

The population was 25 in 1910 and it only increased to 28 in the 1940s. The school consolidated with West, Texas in 1945 and the old name resurfaced.

Nearby Destination
Crawford (also in McLennan County) - Home of the "Western White House".

Subject: School at Tokio Texas
I was born 1933 on a black land farm near Penelope Texas, raised by Deaf Grandparents. My father was a share-cropper. In 1939, I attended school at Tokio, TX, near the city of West, TX. I would love to hear from anyone who attended this school in 1939 and 1940. - John W Dudley, biblestudy@deafusa.com, July 12, 2016
