History in a Pecan Shell

Now a "bedroom community" for Luling and Lockhart, this Elm Grove (one of several in Texas) began in the 1870s.

After being granted a post office, the community was host to a school district. By the mid-1880s, Elm Grove was sawing lumber, grinding grist and cleaning cotton in its steam-powered mills and gin. The population peaked around that time with an estimated 150 residents. Elm Grove post office closed in 1890 when post office was established at nearby Taylorsville.

Farmers shipped produce and cotton, yet even before the Great Depression, the town declined drastically. The school closed and students were sent to other districts. However, they saved the school building and turned it into a community center. This was done in the early 1950s and has been renovated over the years.

Although there has been an influx of new residents in recent years, there is no offical population count (as of 2000).
