History in a Pecan Shell

Named not for the Mediterranean Island, but for Malta, Illinois. This community was granted a post office in the mid 1890s. Early history on the economic development of the town is unavailable, but in 1900 the population was reported as 243. It remained at that figure through the 1940 census.

WWII and the post war boom added to a decrease in residents and the Malta post office closed in the 1950s. In 1985 the population had fallen to around 85, but it bounced back for the 1990 census to 297 people.
