History
in a Pecan Shell
Charlotte is a sister city to Christine and Imogene.
All three were named after the daughters of Dr. Charles Simmons. Imogene (the
town) died early - in fact she never got far past the planning stages. She did
have an oil company housing project for a time, but it is long gone.
Charlotte
and Christine are doing fine. The land for Charlotte had originally been the Tobey
Ranch. Jourdan Campbell (whose name lives on in Jourdanton and Cambellton) was
part owner. The town was not platted in the traditional grid pattern, but as a
wagon wheel, with the spokes leading to the town center. (A plan popular with
jungle tribes in Venezuela and Brazil). |

| The town was laid
out in 1910, although they didn't get around to incorporating until 1946. The
first school was started in a dance hall over a bakery in 1913, but in a short
time they had built a proper school. |
