Santa Fe History in a Seashell

The community dates from 1877 with the building of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad. It’s nearness to Galveston prevented growth and into the 1930s, the town was little more than a village.

Early population figures aren’t available and the town wasn’t incorporated until 1978. Population was around 5,000 for the 1980 census, which grew to 8,600 for the 1990 count. The smaller communities of Arcadia and Alta Loma are now included in the Santa Fe population.
