Elstone
History in a Pecan Shell
Sarah Elstone Mercereau is thought to be the town's namesake. She was a descendant
of the Duke of Marlborough, and a resident of the town, but there's no mention
of how she came to reside in such a remote locale.
For seven years (1910-1917)
Elstone had its own post office. The town had about 50 resident at that time. The
town was doing all right until the 1920s when the boll
weevil ruined area cotton crops. A single
business was reported in 1931, but by the mid-1930s, the town had been totally
abandoned. |
