History in
a Pecan Shell
Settled around 1910, the community had a post office in operation from 1916 to
the mid 1920s. It operated in the store of Sam Patterson. There is no information
currently available on the naming of the town. After the post office closed, mail
was routed through Manchester. With only fifteen residents in 1920, it peaked
in 1930 with about 100 persons present for the census. The 1940 census “enumerated”
50 people which has since declined to a mere 31.
Photographer's Note:
”I found Addielou another peaceable east Texas community that has gone by the
wayside. It has the typical closed store, scattered houses and some farm buildings.
Mostly ranching here. The new highways allow people to commute distances that
were unthinkable in the past. It appears that one little girl is happy with her
surroundings.” - Gerald
