History
in a Pecan ShellThe
town dates from the 1870s when it was first known as Knob and (later) Mount
Pleasant. James Monroe Locker moved in from Bosque County to open the community's
first store and the town was renamed in 1899 when the post office was granted.
Locker served as the town's first postmaster. The population was nearing 200 by
1915, but fell into a decline after WWI
that it never recovered from.
While times were prosperous in most of Texas
in the 20s, Locker lost half of its population. Its school and post office moved
to Richland Springs in the 1950s and from 1967 through 1990 the population was
reported as a mere 16 people. | |
